NOWhaus 2012
Presenter
Inspired by ID's history as the New Bauhaus, NOWhaus was an evening of unconventional six-minute presentations held at Public Works in Chicago on April 5, 2012. The evening was designed, organized, and curated by graduate students of the IIT Institute of Design.
Presentation: Meet up at the bean
What motivated us to rethink the student lounge as a social space.
Coffee is near and dear to many people. It is very common to find a coffee machine in every breakroom corner or next to the wall in the office space. We believe that, there is an awkward moment when someone else is using the coffee machine; we pretend to be busy instead of engaging in conversation. The activity that we share in common is now creating a virtual wall between us. We looked towards ourselves as designers to rethink the space and how it could foster encounters. At Nowhaus, we presented a concept to create a meet up around the coffee routine and set up a space that drives people from the coffee station to the rest of the room.

Creative Judgment
Presentation
As part of my role as a facilitator in a series of workshops to a group of executives. I prepared this presentation with the purpose of promoting an open critique culture in the office.
The what, why, where, when, who questions allowed me to present a simple framework to set contextual situations, discuss common roles and frame specific actions and recommendations. Cultivating a critique culture may not be an easy task in certain contexts however it can be crucial to take ideas to the next level, generate a sense of ownership and teamwork.

Abstract: This paper contemplates the creative and reflective method in which designers and architects explore the limits of material use, through their current applications, and generate innovative applications. This new ways to explore materials should be considered from a local perspective to reduce environmental impact and use materials as tools to undertake ethical projects both for society and ecosystems.

Academic Paper: Media Communications oriented to marketing internal process in organizations.
Peer-reviewed publication. Diseño + 3º International Conference of Design Research ICESI University, Cali, Colombia. 2008. P. 6 ISBN 978-958-8357-12-6.
Authors: Claudia Ruge, Freddy Zapata Vanegas, Santiago Barriga Amaya. Universidad de los Andes.
Description:
The drivers of organizational change such as globalization, the emerging of new commercial dynamics, and strategic alliances, demand that organizations prepare to address conflict related to culture and organizational change. When the members of the organization are not informed about the meaning and the implications of those changes, the moral and ownership can be affected in a negative way. This paper formulates different perspectives that involve knowledge models, innovative structures of communication and the design of interactions that can lead to the transformation of traditional meetings and reports into engaging and efficient dynamics. The result is the effective generation of tools that can be successfully implemented by change agents inside of the organization.
About the Event:
Is a bi-annual conference held in Universidad Icesi in Cali, Colombia. This international meeting invites students, teachers and researchers to propose papers for presentation and demonstrations. The main objective of this event is to create synergies between design and different topics as the result of interdisciplinary cooperation.

Author: Claudia Ruge. Diseño + 2º National Conference of Design Research. ICESI University. Cali, Colombia, June 2006. ISBN 958-9279-85-6
Abstract
This paper applies elements of Scientific Attitude such as observing, questioning, discovering, experimenting, constructing and deconstructing into a practical approach to design educational toys that foster interest of children in learning Science and Technology areas. Those elements are instinctive during the years of childhood, especially when children are exposed to environments and objects that foster exploration and learning by doing. While the proliferation of digital tools and media messages on Internet and television can provide a fast access to different sources of information, it limits the possibilities for them to explore and even try to discover answers about science and nature by themselves. The presentation was intended to share the research findings that led to the design of a construction toy called “Magnetoy.” One of the findings that emerged from observations while the kids were playing with prototypes was the discovery of the Triggers of Scientific Attitude. Those are the prompts that turned the toy into a game and generated specific and fun challenges. “Magnetoy” A scientific toy that includes magnets and building blocks to explore and play with 4 different types of magnetism. This thesis project allowed me to earn my bachelors degree in Industrial Design in 2004. : )

Estrategias de Diseño y Pedagogía incorporadas al desarrollo de material educativo y medios didácticos. Authors: Claudia Ruge, Mariana Buraglia, Miguel Angel Ovalle. Diseño + 2º National Conference of Design Research. ICESI University. Cali, Colombia, June 2006. ISBN 958-9279-85-6
Abstract
The main challenges of education in Colombia are coverage and quality. While coverage is been considered a responsibility from the government through political actions and resource allocation, quality is non-exclusive to educators but also to community and individuals who can contribute with best practices and methods in their field of expertise. My colleagues and I presented an opportunity to apply a set of Industrial Design Principles that could be used as guidelines for designing educational toys and didactics to mediate the communications between teachers and students inside and outside of the classroom. Uncovering the common points between product design strategies and pedagogy, it can be transformed to be used to design and develop materials to teach a variety of subjects such as sciences, environmental education, culture and city, etc.

Featured Project: Cartucho Flower Lamp
Recycled Waste Combined with Natural Flowers can Bring Design to Light
by: Claudia Ruge
“Flower lamp” Product design featured in the publication “Entre objetos / Entre Hilos” Universidad de los Andes. School of Architecture and Design. Bogotá, Colombia, 2003
Author: Claudia Ruge
Technique: Shade: Handmade paper made of recycled waste and petals of flowers. Base: “Carreto” Wood; original from South America.
About the project:
This project set out to incorporate the several techniques of papermaking in home lighting design. the design itself was inspired from the calla lilly, or ¨cartucho¨, a flower native of South America that commonly grows in colombia. The shape of the lamp integrates the base, and the shade resembles the cream color of the flower with a dark stem. One of the most interesting effects achieved was the light passing through the flower petals embedded in the paper. This project was selected due to its creative and inspirational use of the materials applied in the product design.
About the publication:
Project catalog of selected projects from Industrial and Textile Design students to showcase the programs. The publication includes articles written by professors.

About the project:
The coffee cup set is inspired in the shape of the coffee grain and the ritual of drinking coffee in the morning. It is part of the cultural tradition of romantic couples that the first one who gets up in the morning make coffee to the significant other. I designed this tableware to strengthen this romantic bond by creating shapes that complement and fit into each other in one single plate, evoking the coffee grain as a symbol of Colombian coffee culture.
